In 2009, filmmaker Andrew Fedynak of Serenity Arts Project traveled through Europe and the continental U.S. interviewing artists, musicians and other travelers about art, life and their place in the global community. We Created This, the culmination of his travels, is an experimental guerrilla documentary about the state of the world seen through the eyes of some unique, wholly original individuals.

Phil Mechanic Studios served as the home base for Fedynak’s Serenity Arts Project.

Firestorm Cafe and Books will hold the premiere of the guerrilla art documentary “We Created This” on July 22nd at 7:00pm.

Criscoe is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the United States, notably the Texas Biennial and the International Print Center in New York. Criscoe has also been featured in various art publications, including Art Lies and New American Painting: The Western Edition and most recently was a West Prize Acquisition finalist. A native of Austin, Texas, he received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and the University of Texas at Austin, and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008. He currently teaches at both Converse College and USC Upstate.

Terrezza is a UNCA graduate with her B.A. concentration in ceramics. Terrezza is currently showing work at the Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC. As an artist and environmental activist, Terrezza will be featuring her new body of work in the Pump Gallery at the Phil Mechanic Studios. Her work is an image transfer process along with printmaking techniques on clay. Each clay tile is displayed on the wall as an individual piece.

Puppeteer and puppet artist Madison J. Cripps is a professional from Asheville where he is an active member of the performing arts community, including the Asheville Puppetry Alliance. As a performer, Cripps brings his hand-carved marionettes to life with improvised drama, humorous puns and songs. As an artist, he has a studio in Asheville’s River Arts District where he constructs puppets and teaches workshops.

The puppet show at the Upstairs will star some of Cripps’ most popular characters, including Wophie the Dog, Frog and Zombie. All are on display at the gallery’s current exhibit where Cripps has smaller hand puppets for sale. Cripps sets up his own stage and provides musical accompaniment with a harmonica.
Following the show, children will get a chance to interact with the puppets. Juice and cookies will be served. The puppet show is made possible by the Jim Freeman Memorial Fund.

June 10, 11, and 12 – the second weekend in June, join us for the Bi-Annual River Arts District Studio Stroll!

As usual, we will be hopping with exciting things to see and do!

We’ll be presenting the City of Asheville’s Easel Rider  in the parking lot of the Phil Mechanic Studios Building, with all kinds of art activities for everyone wanting to play. . .

And later, on Saturday evening from 5-8 pm we will hold a Motown Street Party with live music from the ever popular WESTSOUND PRODUCTIONS!  So come with your dancing shoes!

An exhibition featuring past work from the Flood and Pump Galleries will take up residence in the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, a short 45 minute drive from Asheville. The opening is set for Saturday, June 4th from 5-8pm. The show will hang until July 23rd, so try to get down to see it. In addition, the Resident artists from Phil Mechanic Studios will be showing their work in the smaller gallery at Upstairs Artspace. So those of you who love the art that’s sold by our resident artists, but live closer to Tryon, be sure and visit the gallery while we’re there!

There will be an interactive discussion that will take place between the artists and the audience on Tuesday, July 12th from 7-8pm at Upstairs Artspace. The discussion? “Who Sez It’s Art?” Come join us for what promises to be an invigorating discussion!

And on Saturday, July 9th join Phil Mechanic’s Madison J. Cripps as he delights children with a puppet show!

Veteran artist Connie Bostic has created a series of mixed media paintings in Bedtime Stories that will no doubt titillate its audience. Successions of images, sensations, even emotions occurring in dreams, and the content thereof remain a mystery to science today. Percy Shelley says that dreams are “gleams of a remoter world [that] visits the soul in sleep”. Bostic opens the Flood Gallery in June, with her personal dreamscapes.

Connie Bostic, artist and Chairman of the Board of Black Mountain College Museum has shown work for more than twenty years in spaces like the Stage Gallery in New York, Duke University, and the Nexus Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta, Ga.

What follows is a note from Andrew Fedynak of the Phil Mechanic Studios Public Darkroom.

Due to an increase in popular demand and the increased number of users in the room, we are refurbishing the way the Public Open Hours are run in the darkroom.  Updates on this information are always present on the webpage.

• The Darkroom is currently open 24 hours of the week by appointment only for 3 dollars an hour. The average tank development of film takes 1 hour from setup to cleanup.

• A user can schedule a minimum of a 3 hour block of time 1 week in advance. Anyone can schedule as many hours and as long as they would like beyond the minimum block of time.

• Times must be scheduled 1 week in advance.

• All times are on a first come first serve basis.

• The hourly fee entitles the user to any of the traditional and digital public supplies within reason, and development chemistry. Paper is not included.

• A supervisor will be on hand during your scheduled appointment times to assist the individuals utilizing the space, and to answer any basic photography questions.
